Comment on Virtual Virtues: What works and does not work for presenting manuscript material online by Dhanashree Thorat http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/2015/04/21/virtual-virtues-what-works-and-does-not-work-for-presenting-manuscript-material-online/#comment-236 Thu, 23 Apr 2015 16:14:24 +0000 http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/?p=252#comment-236 James, I was wondering if you were also going to look at digital archives which deliberately thwart user access/experience? (For instance, indigenous digital archives that have different access levels for elders of the community, for that community, and for general users, etc). I am interested in digital archives that are experiential and try to give users not only information about a subject, but try to immerse them in it.

Comment on TRACE UF initiative: What is Sequentials? by Miller Krause http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/2015/04/20/trace-uf-initiative-what-is-sequentials/#comment-229 Thu, 23 Apr 2015 03:00:38 +0000 http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/?p=245#comment-229 When you talk about the contested definition of “comics,” especially with the kind of quotation marks that merit their own <soCalled> element in TEI, I get the feeling that you’re dancing around another term: prestige. Scholarship has shied away from a number of genres with potentially learned authors and high circulation and cultural impact, genres including declamation and paradoxical encomia and comics, because they lack prestige or fall under the heading of “low” literature. Does the digital toolset give scholars a way to challenge that barrier of generic prestige directly?

Comment on Making Difficult Transitions by Miller Krause http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/2015/04/22/making-difficult-transitions/#comment-227 Wed, 22 Apr 2015 18:19:12 +0000 http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/?p=262#comment-227 I absolutely love this proposal. I think that it’s the only one so far to use the word “honorable.”

If ‘the medium is the message’, it’s always interested me how the digital presence of archives mediates their use. I look forward to others’ thoughts on this topic in this session! I wonder if there is a way to combine this with the digital newspaper session that was also proposed by UF?

Comment on Propose by Laurie http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/propose/#comment-222 Wed, 22 Apr 2015 09:57:05 +0000 http://gainesville2015.thatcamp.org/?page_id=8#comment-222 Good morning,

THATCamps are collaboratively scheduled events, so we’ll create the final schedule as a group during the first hour of the day on Friday. The schedule framework, which we will complete with a listing of activities, discussions, and events, will be ready by 9:30am on Friday. The schedule framework which will be completely filled in is here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/tPJYTYEmR3uD4tJQIQH1uzw/htmlview

The scheduling may seem strange (I thought it was a crazy idea that could not be effective), but it works amazingly well and ensures that participants are interested in and participate in the sessions. It would be wonderful to have you join us for scheduling at 8:30am.

Best wishes,
Laurie N. Taylor
Digital Scholarship Librarian
